Are You a Good Candidate?
Eyelid surgery may achieve your goals if you want to correct:
Sagging skin on your upper eyelids, which can impact your vision
Fatty deposits that result in puffy upper eyelids
Bags beneath your lower eyelids
Droopy lower eyelids
During your consultation, Dr. Arledge will discuss whether combining other procedures, such as dermal fillers with your eyelid surgery will achieve a more complete rejuvenation.
Dr. Arledge begins by marking your eyelids to ensure that she removes the correct amount of skin. Anesthesia is administered to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure, which usually takes 30 minutes for the upper eyelids and 30 minutes to 1 hour for the lower eyelids.
Dr. Arledge makes the incisions within the natural crease of your upper eyelids. To remove excess skin, she typically needs to extend those incisions just beyond your eye. She slants the incision upward so that the scar becomes part of your smile lines after you have healed.
To remove excess skin in your lower eyelids, Dr. Arledge either makes an incision just below the lower lash line or performs what is known as a transconjunctival incision, which is hidden inside the lower eyelid. In addition to removing excess skin and fat, Dr. Arledge sometimes repositions fat from the lower eyelid into the hollows under the eyes.
To reduce bruising and swelling, Dr. Arledge places a bandage around your eyes and recommends cold compresses for the first 48 hours. Most patients experience minimal discomfort and recover in 4 to 10 days. Dr. Arledge recommends waiting 1 week before returning to your regular routine and 2 weeks before exercising.
Results and Benefits
When you look in the mirror after your surgery, you’ll notice how natural your results appear. Your eyelids are smoothly contoured, and those hollows and bags are replaced by firmer, younger looking skin. The result for most of Dr. Arledge’s patients: a refreshed face that does more than enhance their physical appearance; it boosts their self-confidence.
